I am excited to announce the opening of my official website www.photosbymelissarae.com. It’s a portfolio style site that allows my photography to be viewed in an easy, organized, professional matter. This wordpress blog will remain open as it’s still where I’ll be posting my posts of mass photographs from events, premieres and red carpet events. It will also remain a source for movie reviews and much more as this site has helped me get where I am now, and gain the following I have. Thank you all for your support and I hope you enjoy my new platform.
I had the chance to see The Hunger Games: Catching Fire this past Tuesday at the Canadian premiere. Jena Malone who plays Johanna Mason and Sam Claflin who plays Finnick Odair were both in attendance. The two newcomers are incredible in their parts, as are all the other actors in the film. I won’t waste your time talking about the movie now as I have put together a short list of 6 differences between the book and movie that can be read here.
Saturday, May 18th marked the date of the DEMI Buyout in Toronto, Canada. The group started out by meeting up in Dundas Square before making their way over to the HMV Superstore where they proceeded to buy Demi Lovato’s brand new fourth studio album. For those who wanted, they could donate their album(s) to Sick Kids. In total 25 albums were donated to the Hospital in Toronto. This way you can support your favourite artist while giving back to the community. Special thanks to Cody Reid for doing both videography and photography at the event. The completed video will be up soon, there have been some technical difficulties. For more information on future Buyouts and/or events related to Demi Lovato in Toronto follow @DemiBuyoutTO. More pictures can be found in the event page here.
“I don’t know if she ever realized that the person I most wanted to be was her.” – Rory Gilmore
I grew up watching Gilmore Girls on the WB, a television show about two young women who are friends first and mother and daughter second. I’d like to believe that that show is the reason why my mom and I are so close. Every week when a new episode aired we’d sit on the couch together and watch it. I remember when the show ended in 2008 and I was completely crushed because my entire relationship with my mother was built around the close relationship of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. We’re the same person; I’ve become my mother in the best way possible.
Some people think being their mother’s daughter is the worst compliment they could receive and I would have to disagree politely. I love hearing that I look like my mom because she’s beautiful and I love hearing that we act the same because I love her personality. There is something so special about this bond that we share with each other and I feel sad for those who despise the very person I love the most. The very person I look up more then anyone else in the world.
I decided for my project that I wanted to photograph other mothers and daughters with strong tight-knit relationships. The idea is to showcase their similarities and differences while having them in the same location, the same outfit and the same pose. This series was shot in colour to emphasis the subjects. Although the surroundings are the same in each set the people who were photographed are of importance and I feel that it wouldn’t be conveyed the same way through black and white. This allows everyone else to see what I see exactly how I see it.
I was inspired by graphic-designer Carra Skyes, who did something similar with digital photography. Her uncle used to tease her mother asking if she was wearing her clothing. Their quirky photographs are something that reminded me of the Gilmore Girls and I realized that I wanted to capture different mothers and daughters in a similar element. This would be completed using a 4×5 large format camera.
These portraits can speak more then words and show a lifelong bond between mothers and daughters. Although there’s an age difference between the generations, similarities can always be found and I chose to focus on that.
Call me crazy but I’d rather call it dedicated. I decided that it had been way too long since I last saw Demi Lovato. So myself along with two of my best friends flew all the way from our igloos in Canada to see her perform at Universal Studios in Florida. We literally only went for her, arriving Friday morning and departing Sunday morning.
Saturday morning we arrived at Universal Studios around 9:15am (the park opened at 9am). By that time there was already one line/barricaded area and we were in the second one with pink tickets. My friends and I were the ones playing Demi’s music. I was shocked at how cold it was. Camping out was not fun until I went and bought myself a Harry Potter blanket to cuddle up with on the hard ground. It was great talking to and meeting various other fans all day long.
At around 3pm when we had to go to the Hard Rock Cafe for our meet and greet. Unfortunately it meant missing soundcheck and getting spots for the concert. The VIP I purchased did not come with entry into the park so they didn’t have a special area for all of us meeting Demi to go to afterwards. The meet and greet was done through Golden Tickets who have renamed themselves Adventures in Wonderland. They have terrible customer service and sent and email telling us to show up at 2:45pm and they weren’t there until about 4:15pm. The package came with a Heart Attack poster (which I had stolen) lament and t-shirt. For those unaware meet and greets are very short and rushed. Sometimes security won’t even allow you to hug Demi but I went for it anyway. I mean, I just travelled all the way from Toronto, there was no way I wasn’t! Demi smells like rainbows and butterflies. I swear! I am so so so thankful for having the opportunity to hug her again. I would like to note that it took over 72 hours to receive my photograph from Golden Tickets.
General admission/free concerts are a mess. There was shoving, pushing and fighting from a ton of people, clearly not the fans. It was close to becoming a full on mob scene but once Demi came on stage everyone seemed to chill out. Her vocals impress me more and more every f*cking time I see her. She’s absolutely phenomenal and i’m so lucky to have been apart of the first crowd to ever hear her new single Heart Attack sung live.
It’s been more then a week since i’ve posted which is quite shocking since lately it seemed as thought I was posting almost every other day. I apologize sincerely! Recently i’ve been playing around with 4×5 Large Format film photography in school, both colour and black and white. Although frustrating to drag the equipment anywhere besides the studio the results are more then worth it.
I’ve had a lot of school projects lately so i’ve been working in the studio a fair amount. I’ll be posting all my 4×5 photographs sometime at the end of this month or early March. However, these are from two different still life assignments. The first had to have either a flower or fruits and vegetables. The second could be anything. Oh, and i’ve recently joined 500px so you can follow me there by clicking here.
Today was the Justin Bieber Toronto Buyout for his brand new album Believe Acoustic. Sponsored by Universal Music Canada and My Music, CDs bought at the HMV Superstore at Yonge and Dundas are being donated to Sick Kids Hospital. It was great to see so many fans young and old come out today even though it was freezing (and snowing)! This amazing event was planned by three lovely ladies; Julia, Nicole and Vanessa. If you weren’t aware this was the fourth Justin Bieber buyout in Toronto. Look out for the next one whenever Justin releases a new album! For more information you can go here. Also make sure to follow @Toronto_Buyout on Twitter! I will post the link where the rest of the photographs can be found soon! 🙂
Last night I was one of the few lucky individuals who had the opportunity to attend Shawn Desman’s premiere for his movie ALIVE thanks to Ascenta Health. The entire cast which includes Izaak Smith, Melinda Shankar, Kaitlyn Leeb & Bree Wasylenko and obviously Shawn Desman were all in attendance. The director RT Make sure to check it out on Much Music this Tuesday at 7pm.
