I am excited to announce the opening of my official website www.photosbymelissarae.com. It’s a portfolio style site that allows my photography to be viewed in an easy, organized, professional matter. This wordpress blog will remain open as it’s still where I’ll be posting my posts of mass photographs from events, premieres and red carpet events. It will also remain a source for movie reviews and much more as this site has helped me get where I am now, and gain the following I have. Thank you all for your support and I hope you enjoy my new platform.
Almost everyone is familiar with the story of Cinderella. In the classic version the title character, after losing her father becomes a servant for both her stepmother and stepsisters. When the King invites all eligible maidens to go to the ball where his son will pick a bride Cinderella is forbidden to go. With the help from an unexpected fairy godmother nothing is impossible. Growing up I saw many different versions of this fairytale come to life and it’s a story I’ve come to love. I decided to create a modern version of what I think Cinderella would look like in this day and age while keeping elements from the original Disney version. This includes the blue dress she wore and black chocker around her neck. Pumpkins surround Cinderella because in the story her fairy godmother turns them into the chariot that takes her to and from the Prince’s ball. This photograph is meant to show the moment where she’s beginning to transform into a princess for the night. It’s the part of the story that teaches you to believe and it is important to remember that sometimes the good things come suddenly without warning.
We Day is an educational event and the movement of our time—a movement of young people leading local and global change. We Day is tied to the yearlong We Act program, which offers curricular resources, campaigns and materials to help turn the day’s inspiration into sustained activation.
Demi Lovato, the award-winning singer-songwriter and Free The Children ambassador performed two songs on the We Day Toronto stage; Skyscraper (with special guest Darren Criss) and Neon Lights. In the past Demi Lovato’s participated at We Day Vancouver and We Day Seattle. She’s also donated over $10,000 from selling her old clothing on Ebay, raised money on the Price Is Right, and just recently got back from a volunteer trip to Kenya.
Step aside One Direction boy bands, girl groups are taking over.
Fifth Harmony is a group made up of five young girls; Ally Brooke, Camila Cabello, Dinah Jane Hansen, Lauren Jauregui & Normani Kordei. After all auditioning separately for Season 2 of The X Factor USA and after not making it through on their own, they were all brought back, together. The girls are all strong vocalists on their own, which is uncommon between most popular bands/groups. And their harmonic blendings live sound just like how they’re recorded on track, truly spectacular. Fifth Harmony will be back in Toronto on November 5th 2013 at the Opera House!
Fifth Harmony‘s Better Together EP releases on October 22, 2013.
Taking a break from movie premieres and celebrities I got to attend my third TIFF movie this festival, How I Live Now starring Saoirse Ronan and George MacKay. Knowing that I was only seeing a film I didn’t drag my slr camera with me, only a lousy point and shoot. Of course it would be the only non premiere where the actors show up for a Q&A. Besides be frustrated i’m just thankful I had some sort technology to capture them in front of me.
Things generally begin to slow down around this time at TIFF. Most celebrities come into town the first weekend and then they slowly dwindle during the week. Today I had the opportunity to sit through various interviews including ones with Nicholas Cage and Jay Baruchel. After my class ended I ran with a friend over to the Kill Your Darlings premiere hoping to catch a glimpse of Danielle Radcliffe and Dexter (Michael C. Hall). Unfortunately showing up late doesn’t give you the best spots so the pictures I attempted at are all but a blur. Dane Dehaan who people may recognize from A Place Beyond the Pines ended up being really sweet as he came out a second time to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. Last but not least I got to see Saoirse Ronan, who I’d been waiting for since I found out she would be here for the festival. I actually met her at the exact same location two years ago when she was here for Violet and Daisy. Originally we were scared that she wasn’t going to come over to the side of the street that security puts barricades at, the place where fans are actually supposed to stand although it’s extremely inconvenient. Thankfully, after fans screaming, she did. I had a little problem with my camera, I ended up knocking the setting to focus on aperture without realization and my pictures came out almost completely black. But with a little help from my friend photoshop the photographs are visible, although a little grainy. I actually think it adds character. It’s like they were taken with film rather then a digital camera.
Today was pretty rough. I originally wanted to get some shots of Meryl Streep at her premiere but she fell sick and didn’t attend. The two other people I hoped to see was Mila Kunis and Taylor Swift. The problem was Mila Kunis had two red carpets to be at in little to no time in between. Therefore I thought it would be smart to wait at the back of the theatre because both Mila and Taylor would be in the same place at the same time. Win, right? Not so much. I’ve also learned that Ms. T Swizzle is only friendly and nice to fans when the cameras are rolling. Luckily when following her later in the night because I wanted a photograph with her more than anything, I ran into Abigail Breslin, who I might add really is Little Miss Sunshine. Abigail took pictures with fans as she left the SoHo House last night. I also had the chance to meet Jessica Chastain earlier in the day at the Elgin Theatre, who was very polite taking photographs and signing autographs for fans at the exit.
Today has been the longest day I’ve experienced in a while. I attended the 12pm showing of Can A Song Save Your Life? and fell in love with the film (review to follow). It was the same feeling I had after seeing Silver Linings Playbook last year at the festival. Basically I thought it was absolutely brilliant.
On to the next order of business.
I was lucky enough to be graced with the presence of James Lafferty. I have loved this boy since One Tree Hill began airing in 2003 and wanted nothing more then to get my photograph with Nathan Scott. Back in 2009 I took a trip to Wilmington, North Carolina to visit the set with a best friend of mine. Unfortunately we didn’t get to meet any of the main cast and arrived at TRIC just two minutes after James left set and I was devastated. You can read about the trip here. And apparently Toronto is the best place for a One Tree Hill reunion as Tyler Hilton, who played Chris Keller on the television show was also in town. This was the second time I was able to get a picture with him.
Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto weren’t as fan friendly as I would’ve thought/hoped. I spotted them leaving press meetings and although they looked over they didn’t seem to give anyone their time of day.
Afterwards I made my way over to the Night Moves premiere. Before I grabbed a spot on the red carpet I waited to snap some pictures of Jake Gyllenhaal leaving the Ryerson Theatre after his film Enemy ended. Dakota Fanning took a couple pictures before heading in claiming that she was running late but didn’t even stay for the movie. On top of that, Jesse Eisenberg followed but had no problem with taking pictures and singing autographs for those who asked.
It’s that time of year again… TIFF is here! And I celebrated it in the only way I know how, by taking pictures of celebrities I love at premieres. I decided to kick off the festival with The Railway Man and Parkland (at Roy Thomson Hall). I had the joy of seeing Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Kelly Rowan, Colin Hanks, Tom Welling, Zac Efron and Jacki Weaver. On top of that, I got a photograph with both Kelly and Zac.
