Rineke Dijkstra

For one of my photography classes, every two weeks we need to submit 1-3 photographs that we’ve taken that have been inspired by a specific photographer. The first was Rineke Dijkstra. A fair amount of her pictures are taken in front of a blank or very limited background so there’s no distractions. I also took into consideration how all of her subjects are natural,  they don’t show a lot of expression and are very simplistic. However, unlike Rineke I shot the subject from above whereas Rineke shoots hers from below. That’s how I approached the project. You can check out some of Rineke Dijkstra’s work here.

Self-Portraits

Some people think my life is really exciting. I would like to destroy those rumours by explaining how I spent my Saturday nights. Yes nights not night. Well, I was home alone with all this makeup that I bought in New York city and my new tripod and nothing else so I spent my time taking photographs of myself. It was all to help me learn not because i’m super conceited, that’s far from the case. This is also not me complaining about how I spent my weekend nights because I don’t mind time to myself. Most of my friends are all away at University and I live at home so I don’t meet people like a normal college student wouldn’t who lives on res does. Enough about boring old me, here’s two of the pictures from yesterday.

Warm Bodies: Movie Review with SPOILERS

Warm Bodies

Warm Bodies is based off of  Isaac Marion’s popular novel of the same name. The author originally wrote a short story called, I Am a Zombie Filled with Love which became an internet sensation nearly three years ago before Atria Books acquired the publishing rights for the full novel back in 2010. The full length story known as Warm Bodies was published in 2011.

The book jacket says, “’R’ is a zombie. He has no name, no memories, and no pulse, but he has dreams. He is a little different from his fellow Dead.” In a post apocalyptic America destroyed by war, disease and the loss of humans hunger from the growing number of the undead R (Nicholas Hoult) falls for a girl named Julie (Teresa Palmer). For an unknown reason he chooses to spare her life rather then making her a meal. He craves something more then just blood. Well actually there is a reason, to ensure that a killed human doesn’t come back to life as a corpse you have to eat their brain. By doing so it allows you to see their memories and have their feelings. Causing R to make an unexpected choice to save the victim’s girlfriend which breaks all the rules. Their strange relationship begins to change R. He’s becoming more human every day that passes and it’s beginning to catch on to the other corpses as well as they remember how to feel. R wants to live. And Julie wants to help him but it isn’t going to be easy to convince the humans. In the rotting world they’re stuck living; Julie, R and the other zombies won’t go down without a fight. This comedic love story is tale about the power of human connection and one you don’t want to miss.

Like the various trailers for this film the movie opens with a witty and clever introduction to the zombie apocalypse and R’s world. The hilarious commentary pulls the audience in from the very beginning and keeps your eyes attached to the screen until the very end. The humans spend their time killing zombies and trying to save their family members from becoming one of them. The cure is to live. That was unknown to everyone until Julie and R helped them realize. As the minutes on the clock rolled by they were running out of time to convince the humans as the bonies (zombies that have worn away to become only skeletons) were also getting closer to killing them themselves. The bonies were not happy about R saving Julie and wanted them both dead as well as the rest of the zombies who weren’t on their side. R makes the final choice to save Julie when they fall many feet into a pool of water. Miraculously they both live. After Julie kisses R you see his pupils get bigger and his eyes become blue, the final transformation. When they pull away Julie’s father shoots R only for Julie to notice that he’s bleeding and corpses do not bleed. He actually became human from living.

Fun fact: The film and book make various references to the famous tragic love story Romeo and Juliet. The most obvious being the main characters names; ‘R’ and ‘Julie’ for ‘Romeo’ and ‘Juliet.’ There’s also a scene in the movie where Julie’s outside on her friend Nora’s balcony and R is standing at the bottom. He can’t get caught by any humans because they’d shoot him dead within seconds. RomeoRomeowherefore art thou Romeo?

Nicholas Hoult is an amazing actor. Watching him on screen, you can’t help but fall for his character. It’s the same way I  felt when I first saw him in X Men: First Class. I don’t know if there’s anyone who could’ve played this part better then him, specifically when it came to those subtle expressions. Spot on. I really enjoyed Rob Corddry who played M, another Zombie and R’s best friend. He was the lucky actor who got to swear the most and make some really great comments. Teresa Palmer was someone i’ve never heard of before this film. I thought she did a really great job even if I think it should’ve been me making out with Nick instead. Yeah, i’m just a little bitter…

Make sure to check out Warm Bodies next week when it hits theatres on Friday February 1, 2013.

New York City

I just spent this past weekend in New York City with about 100 other students (most from my school and program, some not). I was really hoping to walk into one of my favourites who I knew happened to be in town at the same time… that’s you Jennifer Lawrence, Matt Bomer and Nick Jonas. Although I didn’t get a chance to snap a picture I did see Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield leaving NBC Studios (Saturday Night Live). They didn’t stop to take photographs or to talk to any of the approximately 15 people waiting outside. But this post is about my pictures not celebrities. Enjoy!

Golden Globes

Last night was the 70th Annual Golden Globes hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. These two brilliant ladies did a phenomenal job. A true salute to girl power. I would love it if they were able to host my life. That would be more then fabulous.

“You know what Taylor Swift? You stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son.” – Tina Fey

“Meryl Streep is not here tonight. She has the flu, and I hear she is amazing in it!” – Amy Poehler

Random Thoughts Throughout the Night:
– Dennis Quaid doesn’t age. He still looks exactly as he did during The Parent Trap. He’s a complete DILF. Yeah, I said it.
– Lea Michele had an obvious fake spray tan making her look like this.
– Taylor Swift’s ice queen death glare to Adele when her song ‘Skyfall’ won was priceless. Is that the first time Taylor hasn’t won an award? She didn’t appear to be the most gracious loser. And ready for one more Friends reference? I know I wasn’t the only one who thought of this scene.
– Jennifer Lawrence, all your fans on the internet have been calling JLaw forever.
– Robert Pattinson looked like a lost puppy when presenting Quentin Tarantino with his award. He was just so shy and wasn’t sure how to greet him. I thought it was really cute!
– Anne Hathaway  mentioned that she started out as the PRINCESS OF GENOVIA! A+
– Les Mis shouldn’t have won Best Motion Picture Comedy/Musical.
– All the Leonardo DiCaprio jokes online. They could introduce a “Best Lead Performance as Leonardo DiCaprio in the Life of Leonardo DiCaprio” award and Leo still wouldn’t win.

Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrel were the best presenters of the night by far. I was laughing so hard during their entire skit. I’ll post the clip right after I talk about Jennifer Lawrence since they present her with Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy/Musical and the video includes both parts.

Jennifer Lawrence beat  both MAGGIE SMITH and MERYL STREEP which is a huge accomplishment in her career if you ask me. First of all in her speech when she said “Oh what does it say? I beat Meryl!” I would like to point out that was a joke. Some people aren’t aware but she was quoting the film First Wives Club. I love how much grace Jennifer Lawrence has every time she wins. This speech had to have been one of the ones that’s touched me the most. I swear she was at the verge of tears when she reached the part where she talks about her brothers. Let me also say that Jennifer had the flu and she still looked flawless. I agree with what Ross Matthews had to say on the matter, “If that’s what she looks like with the flu, lick my face and give ME the flu!”

“Thank you Harvey [Weinstein] for killing whoever you had to kill to get me up here today.” – Jennifer Lawrence

“I wanna thank my family. Mom, people said you were crazy for believing in me, and you did it anyway. Dad, you taught me to laugh and that has been my salvation through all of this. I wanna thank my brothers Ben and Blaine. I wouldn’t be who I am today without you being mean to me but then really supportive and loving. Constantly.” – Jennifer Lawrence

But that’s not when the cuteness stopped. Backstage in the pressroom Jennifer got confused on what to do and it was so adorable.

Just like at the Critics Choice Movie Awards, Ben Affleck won Best Director for Argo. This is when you realize who The Academy snubbed big time. Especially after winning a Golden Globe now, it’s surprising that he wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar.

One of the only consistent winners this season has been Anne Hathaway for Best Supporting Actress. No one else in that category even stood/stands a chance.

I want to end this with how I really hate that Silver Linings Playbook is put in the Comedy category. Sure it may have it’s comedic moments but it’s a serious film. The issues dealt within the movie are not a joking matter. It makes it seem like mental illness is something to laugh about when that is far from what’s acceptable.

Critics Choice Movie Awards

Tonight was the 18th Annual People’s Critics Choice Movie Awards in Santa Monica California. Every nominee is extremely talented and well-deserving of the award in their category, but there can only be one winner. I would also like to become a critic because getting to watch movies for a living has to be one of the best jobs in existence.

I will never get tired of talking about Jennifer Lawrence, ever. The thing I love most about Jennifer is how completely humble she is when accepting an award. And when she loses she’s genuinely happy for the winner because she’s just grateful to be nominated. Tonight she racked in Best Actress in an Action Movie for her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, Best Actress in a Comedy for her her role as Tiffany Maxwell in Silver Linings Playbook, Best Comedy for Silver Linings Playbook and Best Acting Ensemble for Silver Linings Playbook. Not too shabby! Jennifer was also nominated for Best Actress which went to Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Best Picture which went to Argo. Never underestimate this lately, she’s quickly taking the film industry by storm at the young age of 22. I would also like to congratulate Jennifer on her second Oscar nomination which was announced this morning.

“Critics aren’t so bad.” – Jennifer Lawrence

No one was more deserving of Best Supporting Actress then Anne Hathaway for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables. If you’ve seen the movie it’d be hard for you to disagree. Her rendition of I Dreamed A Dream has the ability to put you in tears. I remember the first time I ever heard her sing, it was in the movie Ella Enchanted and I didn’t think it was actually her. There was a tiny mistake tonight when announcing the nominee’s they spelt her name as Ann Hathaway instead of Anne, missing the e. As she walked on stage to accept her award she pointed it out while mentioning that she probably shouldn’t.

This is a bittersweet moment because I have this award but you spelled my name wrong.” – Anne Hathaway

I’m really happy for Ben Affleck on his award for Best Director after being snubbed for an Oscar nomination. Ben is so well rounded in this industry as an actor, director, writer and producer. He can do it all and he does it right. His speech tonight had to have been one of the biggest highlights as he actually called out the Academy on their clear mistake.

“I would like to thank the Academy — I’m kidding, I’m kidding this is the one that counts.” – Ben Affleck

Quvenzhane Wallis is absolutely adorable. Tonight she won Best Young Actor/Actress for her role as Hushpuppy in Beasts of the Southern Wild. She also becomes the youngest actress in history to receive and Oscar Award nomination at 9. Quvenzhane walked on stage tonight with her thank you speech typed out on a phone (not sure if it was hers or not). The microphone stood taller then her but she was so cute. I wanted to give her a hug. I have yet to see the movie she stars in but I definitely plan to now.

The movie Lincoln also won a fair amount of awards tonight. I’m sure the acting’s great but I have no interest in ever seeing that movie. It looks like a bore and I feel as though I’d fall asleep in the theatre. We’ll have to see if i’m proved wrong. I have don’t have very long to catch up on all the Oscar nominated films.

Congratulations to all of the winners tonight! Only two more nights until the Golden Globes on Sunday!

Peoples Choice Awards

Tonight was the 39th Annual People’s Choice Awards at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. But they should think about calling the show “If you were nominated and in attendance you won” award show. Every award was pretty obvious if you watched the red carpet in advance and knew who was there. It wasn’t all that much of a shocker.

Thoughts that needed to be said:
– Jennifer Lawrence should’ve walked on stage as Katniss while Alicia Keys peformed Girl On Fire.
– There’s no way Katy Perry won all 4 of her awards.
– Lea Michele shouldn’t be considered a comedic actress.
– Adam Sandler should probably retire, no idea what that little speech he did tonight was…
– They should’ve played the ‘get off the stage’ music for XTina.
– Jennifer Aniston is gorgeous and never ages.
– Brittany Snow looks perfect in her yellow dress.
– Emma Watson is adorable but I was disappointed she didn’t do the red carpet with the rest of her Perks of Being a Wallflower cast.
– Taylor Swift looked terrifying with her eye makeup. It was awkward and made it look like she had two black eyes.

Counting Down: My 5 Favourite Moments/Things To Happen at the PCAs
5. Although said singer wasn’t in attendance and you had to check the online list to know that Demi Lovato won Favourite Celebrity Judge I am more then happy for her. Although I think she was ripped off by Katy Perry in her other two categories.

4. If you don’t like Ellen Degeneres then you’re lying. She’s hilarious and perfect in all ways. Best moment was when she said thanks then walked away before turning around and returning to the podium because she had an award to present but wanted to hear an applause first.

3. It took way too long and it was nearly long enough if you ask me but getting to see Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. The Hunger Games cast slayed tonight taking in a total of 4 awards for; Favourite Movie, Favorite Movie Franchise, Favorite On Screen Chemistry and Favorite Action Movie. In total the Hunger Games cast racked in 6/7 awards that they were nominated for. Clearly i’m a fan. I went to the Toronto Hunger Games premiere back in March of last year. And for the fandom it’s been a big day! It started with Entertainment Weekly giving us the first stills for the sequel Catching Fire. Catching Fire will hit theatres at the end of this year in November.

2.  Did you see Matt Boner Bomer tonight?! He is literally a sex god. The only thing that would’ve made him even hotter is if he wasn’t wearing a shirt but that’s not appropriate for an award show now is it? I am thankful for his existence and his infectious grin that makes me squeal every time I lay eyes on him. Tonight he presented two awards with Chloe Grace Moretz so not only did I get to stare at him on the red carpet but during that time on stage as well. THANK YOU AWARD SHOW GODS. And i’m thankful for a 5th season of White Collar. Unfortunately the show didn’t win in the category they were nominated.

1. It’s not a surprise how much I admire Jennifer Lawrence so when she won both Favourite Face of Heroism and Favourite Movie Actress for The Hunger Games I was ecstatic! If you don’t believe me you can go look through my tweets. She’s so incredibly talented and humble. I don’t think there was one person in the room tonight who wasn’t happy for her. The best thing about her acceptance speak was the Mean Girls reference she made. It just proves that Jen is just one of us who made it on the outside. And she looked absolutely gorgeous tonight! I look forward to this upcoming award season. I see big things happening for Jennifer as this may be the year she finally gets an Oscar for her role as Tiffany Maxwell in Silver Linings Playbook.

“I wish this was like Mean Girls where I could just break this up and give it to all of you.”

White Collar: My Newest Obsession

I’ve become quite fond of a fair amount of shows over the years; Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill, Friends. And now you can add White Collar to that list. Unlike others I learned of the show because of a favourite actress of mine. Hilarie Burton, who’s known for her role as Peyton Sawyer in One Tree Hill. She then left Wilmington to join the cast of White Collar in their second season playing the role of Sara Ellis, an insurance investigator. But before I confuse you all by talking about her it’s probably better that you know what the show’s about.

Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) a white collar criminal makes a deal with the FBI and more specifically the man who caught him Agent Peter Burke (Tim DeKay) to help catch other criminals using his expertise as an art and securities thief, counterfeiter and racketeer. Intriguing? I think so!

Let me start by saying that Matt Bomer’s character needs to be topless more because he’s gorgeous. Matt’s like Neil Patrick Harris but sexier (he pulls off the suits better then Barney Stinson too). And I wish he weren’t gay so that we could end up together. Okay fine, it wouldn’t happen even if he was straight but a girl can dream. Now Neal Caffrey is not only incredibly handsome and well dressed wearing suits with ties and fedoras in every episode but he’s also charming with an infectious grin.

White Collar has the ability to be serious, suspenseful, gut-wrenching, funny and even touching (you’ll probably only end up watching it to stare at Matt Bomer for 42 minutes every week). I’m going to take a minute to post a few favourite quotes of mine from the show. The comedic ones may not seem as so on paper but when you’re watching it, you’ll be fighting to not let that laugh out.

Neal Caffrey: “You know, the nice thing about fireworks, there’s usually a second show.”

Neal Caffrey: If you want a happy ending, it depends on where you stop the story.

Mozzie: You know the worst thing about art forgery? You can’t take credit for your work.

Neal Caffrey: “My favorite protection is avoiding situations where people might shoot me.”

Neal Caffrey: “No more relationship advice from this side of the car. Call doctor Phil.”

Peter Burke: You are way out of your league.
Neal Caffrey: Ah, harmless flirting. It’s like a dance.
Peter Burke: Naa, there is no dance. You’re not even on her dance card. No dancing for you.
Neal Caffrey: Umm, she digs the hat.
Peter Burke: Mmm, she’d rather be wearing the hat.

There’s a lot more I want to say but can’t. I don’t want to ruin anything for those who haven’t even seen episode one yet but want to. Maybe i’ll do a spoiler-like post about this show after but for the time being this will have to do. I have a favourite couple that I would love to never shut up about (as usual). I do think that Peter Burke ships them even more then I do. There’s always that one character in a show that ships the people you want to end up together, always.

I’m just going to finish this up by saying that I really do love this show. It’s not one of those overly dramatic teen dramas like Gossip Girl or 90210. It doesn’t even have any of those fictional vampires in it like True Blood. But I can tell you that it’s entertaining to watch from minute one. You’ll fall in love with different characters, you’ll fall in love with different ships (maybe find a new top on the way), and you’ll fall in with some of the stories and you’ll fall in love with the show. What’s the harm in trying to watch it?

The show is well into their fourth season, with 6 episodes remaining in the season. If you want to start watching you have about two weeks to catch up since they’re currently on their mid-season break. It won’t take you too long. Enjoy!

White Collar returns Tuesday, January 22 at 10/9c.

Bethany Joy Lenz’s Album ‘Then Slowly Grows’: Music Review

Then Slowly Grows - Front

Bethany Joy Lenz. You’re probably wondering where you’ve heard that name before if you ever have. It’s quite possible that you have no idea who this talented artist is. I was first introduced to her music through One Tree Hill where she played the character Haley James (Scott) on the popular CW show. In season 1 episode 14: Suddenly Everything Has Changed her voice was first heard as she sang a cover of the song “Elsewhere” by Sarah McLachlan. Surprisingly Joy’s voice wasn’t the reason for her being cast on the show but it did become an integral part of the character bringing ahead a new storyline. When Haley went on tour the producers of One Tree Hill thought it would be clever to have the actress mirror her character. Bethany Joy Lenz then set out on a 23 city tour in the United States with fellow artist Tyler Hilton who guest starred in the show as Chris Keller and Gavin DeGraw who sings the shows theme “I Don’t Want to Be.” This led to her being signed by Epic Records but before an album could be released she was dropped. For a little while Joy alongside her good friend Amber Sweeney created a duo called Everly. I believe they decided to part ways as of now.

Getting your hands on her music isn’t easy so when I saw this album for sale online at BTF Concerts I nearly peed my pants. I didn’t actually, that’s just what I say to express how excited I was. But I’ve been waiting to get a hard copy forever. At least that’s what if felt like. Unfortunately i’m still not there as a problem arose. The CDs were damaged and the manufacturer refused to burn new discs and send them out but they were nice enough to give us a zip file of the songs we purchased so they could keep our money. I however, only bought it for the physical aspect. It’s like iTunes. I absolutely hate it. If I want to buy an album I want the CD, in a case, with the booklet. Not some stupid digital version. That’s not how I do.

Let’s get to the music!

After what feels like forever the wait is finally over! Then Slowly Grows is a breathtakingly beautiful piece of work. Joy’s lullaby-like voice is raw and magical in every aspect. It’s compelling nature has the power to calm you down no matter what mood you’re in. I could fall asleep to her soothing sound in a minute if I wasn’t too busy enjoying it to do so. All of the melodies are incredibly beautiful and fun to listen to. The soft use of a guitar or piano instrumentally in the background is necessary to set the mood but never overpowering. Joy’s vocals are always the main attraction. Her lyrics are personal and earnest as they find their way into your heart. This album is absolutely precious and nothing short of amazing. I could go into detail on every song but I don’t think it’s needed. I believe you’re all entitled to your own opinions and hope you’ll share them with me if you do in fact check Then Slowly Grows out. Hopefully you won’t be able to take it off repeat.

My personal favourites are Shiver, Devil’s Archerists, Anybody Else & Blue Sky even though every song is perfect in it’s own way. This album is a product of a true artists love for music and songwriting. She’s not in it for the money but because this is what Joy lives for; music. Her gift deserves to be shared and discovered by the entire world. I’m so proud of how far she’s come and can’t wait to see everything the future holds for this wonderful young women.

If this is your first time ever hearing the name Bethany Joy Lenz i’m sure it won’t be your last.

“Music’s something I’ll be doing for the rest of my life, whether I’m just playing guitar in my living room or whether I’m playing for 3,000 people.”

You can purchase Then Slowly Grows digitally for $12 here.
To read my blog from when I visited the set of One Tree Hill you can do so here.

Interested in some old school Bethany Joy? I recommend searching the following songs on Youtube: Halo, Songs In My Pockets & Crazy Girls. Without ever hearing them I don’t know if I ever would’ve become the fan I am today. Then again I have One Tree Hill to thank for introducing me to Joy in the first place.
